AGTF Blog

This is the combined blog for the members of the Alumni Governance Task Force, a body commissioned jointly by the Association of Alumni (AOA) and the Alumni Council. As volunteers, we have a developed a constitution that reforms many alumni governance processes, providing for greater transparency, greater democracy, and greater opportunities for broad alumni involvement. Use the search box (above) to view our archives to see the discussions that occurred throughout the comment-gathering period. Please join the AOA Blog for an ongoing discussion of these issues. If you have questions, contact us directly by sending an email to AGTaskForce [at] alum [dot] dartmouth [dot] org; it will go to all of us, and we will respond to your email.

Dartmouth Proposed New Alumni Constitution (April 14 Version)

Fellow Alumni,

The Alumni Governance Task Force (AGTF) has presented its proposed new alumni constitution (April 14 version) for public review, and it has been circulated to members of the Alumni Council for a discussion and vote at their May 19 meeting. View the proposed new constitution by visiting http://alumni.dartmouth.edu/leadership/ association/Apr14ProposedConstitution.pdf.

For an executive summary of the April 14 version and a side-by-side comparison of this version with the current constitution, visit the Association of Alumni home page, http://alumni.dartmouth.edu/ leadership/association.

Members of the AGTF are available to meet with you, your constituents, and alumni groups to answer questions about the proposal and to provide additional background or information. This is an important document--one that represents a broad range of alumni input gathered and incorporated over a five-year period--with the potential to strengthen alumni governance and give alumni a greater role in the life of the College. Should the Council choose to endorse it, it will be presented to all alumni for an all-media vote this year.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this process, or if the AGTF can help you address the needs of your members and classmates.

For Dartmouth,

Joe Stevenson '57 Tu'58

Chair
Alumni Governance Task Force

  • I'm still reading through the new version, so I'll have more comments later; however, I did note one thing I feel merits pointing out already:

Section 2.1 defines the term "voting member" to mean a voting member of the Association. All former references to "voting members of the Association" have been changed to simply "voting members". While useful in shortening the document and making certain sections clearer, this backfires a bit when the constitution talks about who are voting members of the Assembly, the ALB, or sub-committees. For instance, section 5.2.1 says, "The following shall be voting members of the Assembly:"; 5.2.1.3 says five at-large members will be "elected by a vote of all voting members each year"--is this voting members of the Association, or the Assembly? Similarly, 5.3.2 says that alumni can run for the at-large positions on the Assembly by filing "a petition signed by 50 voting members." This used to be explicitly voting members of the Association; as it is written now, however, it could be interpreted as being voting members of the Assembly--a much smaller pool from which to collect 50 signatures!

Since this version is already being circulated to Council members in preparation for their vote, I'm assuming any such inadvertent lack of clarity can no longer be remedied--is this correct?
